Interactive Screen 2000

trip report

Go See Now

Arcangel
Some very fresh Flash sound and image artistry by Arcangel. An artist from Mexico, Arcangel brings to the screen the illustration techniques and mischievous humor found in the murals all over Mexico City.

Blast Theory
Combining art terrorism, deep research methodology, media technological savvy and one hell of a sense of humor! Blast Theory is a collective of souls working in and around analogue and digital media who are committed to making us think - and laugh - about the info water in which we swim.

XPT
One of the few groups making a genuine attempt to discover the Internet's own voice, XPT is a company to whom content is the only thing.

Adam Frank
The guy who brought those cute but kinda unsettling Dogz, Katz and Babyz? Well, now he's moved on to People, and unsettling has become downright scary.

Overview

Interactive Screen is a conference / workshop hosted by the Banff New Media Institute (BMI) at the Banff Centre for the Arts. Sara Diamond, the director of the BMI, has a long-running reputation for putting together the best combination of industry people, artists, designers and theoreticians to be found anywhere.

Why Go?

Groups tend to be small (approx. 30), and the panels and presentations rich in content and low in bs. Combined with the getaway feel of the Banff Centre, these characteristics lead to a free-flowing conversations that moves easily back and forth between mundane marketing considerations to esoteric aesthetic issues. You should go if you are interested in getting a fresh perspective on whatever part of the digital media world you inhabit, and in making some deep contacts with a diverse pool of talent and ideas.

Plus, you're in the middle of one of the most beautiful environments in the world. The Centre sits on a mountainside looking down the Bow Valley, cradled by the Canadian Rockies. You can play dodge 'em with the Elk and go hiking until you drop.
