FlashForward
2001 19 - 21 February, Civic Center,
San Francisco
Flash on a PDA? On a watch? On the Playstation 2? Yep, all
those places and more. Macromedia is taking Flash Everywhere
very seriously, with a concerted drive to get it on as many
platforms as possible. The highlight of the FlashForward conference
was the announced release of the PocketPC version of a Flash
4 player, as well as developer guidance for targeting that
platform. Also of interest was extensive coverage of Flash
5's impressive implementation of object-oriented ActionScript,
it's integration with XML and the general level of excitement
and creativity around the product. Read a more extensive report.
Residency
1.2 : CodeZebra 26 November - 6 December
The Code Zebra residency was undertaking in order to articulate
and outline a software that embodies chat and discourse analysis
on line, considers live events and the affective qualities
of these and enables long term focused dialogues between individuals
and groups from diverse cross disciplinary communities. The
software seeks to facilitate the performance of identities,
in the now time span of the Internet and streamed media and
in the historical sense of a topical digital archive. It will
use meta data analysis, text analysis, and computational linguistics
and performance theory as well as advanced visualization techniques.
The
residency, which included 20+ participants and spanned 10
days, brought forward a number of issues surrounding on-line
conversational spaces. Paramount among these, at least from
the Lab's perspective, is the question/challenge of creating
a seamless conversation environment which centralizes chat,
email and mailing-lists into one place, allowing the user
to coordinate and overview the full range of her on-line communications.
If email is still the killer app of the net, what happens
if we beef it up and extend it? A site capturing the residency
is here.
CRiT
1.3 : CodeZebra 4 December
Our fourth in the CRiT (Creative Reviews of Interactive Technology)
series took place at the SF MoMA and featured the participants
of the CodeZebra residency talking about what they had worked
on. They (we) also presented a rough scenario of a conversation
environment that could provide a more comprehensive chat experience.
It's way, way out there, but points the way to future product
possibilities. See the CodeZebra Residency site for more info.
ISEA
2000 7 December - 11 December, Forum
des Images, Forum des Halles de Paris, Paris ISEA was
a disappointment. The highlight was that the two presentations
by the Lab, one an institutional talk and the other about
the ActiveText work, were quite well-attended and generat
alot of interest in the Lab's work. Otherwise, organization
was so bad it was almost sublime created a general undercurrent
of chaos which got in the way of the work being presented.
Please take a look at the trip
report.
QuickTakes
I'm collecting together short notes/reviews that I've done
for AA family members here.
So far I have a take on Curl, game consoles and QEDSoft's
interesting third-party avatar technology.
Tech
Scholarship Website
The Lab worked with Natascha and Barbara in the London office
to create the website for the 2001 Arts Alliance - Sun Technical
Scholarship program. Take a look.
